Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the United Nations General Assembly on September 23, calling for sustained international pressure on Russia to end what he described as “Putin’s crazy war.”
Zelenskyy singled out Russian President Vladimir Putin as the primary obstacle to peace, referring to him as “patient zero” from whom the war continues to spread. He noted that no one openly supports the conflict “except for one man.”
In his remarks, Zelenskyy highlighted recent Russian military losses, stating that Russia had lost 248,000 soldiers over the last eight months while capturing only a little more than 1,000 square kilometres of Ukrainian territory this year. “Putin spent 248 people for every kilometre. Does anyone still think he is smart?” he asked.
The Ukrainian leader emphasized the human cost, pointing to archived footage of Russian soldiers losing their lives and asserting that Putin remains unwilling to declare an end to the fighting. He urged continued sanctions and economic measures to impede Russia’s war efforts.
Zelenskyy’s speech comes amid ongoing diplomatic efforts involving the United States and European partners to explore de-escalation steps and potential negotiations.
