Sen. Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.) said Senate Democrats chose their "visceral hatred" for President Donald Trump over passing the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, a key piece of crypto market structure legislation.
Speaking Tuesday at CoinDesk's Policy & Regulation event, Lummis expressed dismay at the bill's failure to advance on a procedural vote the prior week. She noted that the measure had grown from roughly 300 pages to more than 600 through negotiations, incorporating Democratic priorities such as bankruptcy protections.

"The problem was, as I see it, Democrats hate President [Donald] Trump more than they like good policy, and the way I see it is they chose their visceral hatred for President Trump and denied the opportunity to pass important policy legislation before a midterm," Lummis said. "They chose that … pin it on the Democrats."

Every Senate Democrat voted against the motion to proceed, Lummis said, adding that she credited Sens. Angela Alsobrooks and Kirsten Gillibrand for acting as "honest brokers" during talks. The bill aimed to provide regulatory clarity for digital assets, including provisions on ethics and consumer protections.
Democrats have pointed to concerns over Trump's reported $1.4 billion in crypto-related income in 2025 as a key reason for opposition, arguing the legislation did not sufficiently address potential conflicts of interest.
